Another Cake Under My Belt

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

I have been very laggy about keeping up with my cake class blogs.  My current course is Fondant and Gumpaste and last night was the last class, so I guess it’s really no longer current…Anyway, I missed the first class because I was on a much needed vacation cruising the Caribbean with my husband and our friends Angry and Jeff. The second class I totally cheated and covered some Styrofoam in fondant because I was too lazy to make a cake.  I didn’t even take pictures that night.  Last week we learned how to make daisies, carnations and the “fantasy flower” (which is basically a flower that doesn’t exist in nature).  I loved the little daisies, they were simple and fun to make.  The carnations were a bit more challenging, but I liked the results.  And the fantasy flower I despised at first, but it has grown on me and I now think it may be my favorite.  Well…second favorite, the rose is still my #1. I didn’t take any pictures of those either, but they’re still sitting on my kitchen counter.

Moving on.

Last night was the final class and again we had free reign to make whatever we wanted as long as it included some of the flowers we learned to make.  It took me awhile to decide on a design.  I tend to always lean toward the dark side of things: skulls, black, etc.  But I didn’t want to do more skulls because I did that for my last cake.  I figured I would step slightly out of the box and do something with pink (SHOCKER!). I looked around the interwebs for some inspiration and finally came up with my concept.  I spent Wednesday night making a bunch of pink gumpaste flowers so they would have time to harden before class. I showed up to class armed with my white fondant covered champagne cake (I skipped all the coconut crap and used a buttercream frosting instead), black fondant and my plethora of flowers ready to concur.

It took me an hour and a half to kneed, roll out, cut and “glue” all of the zebra stripes onto the side of the cake. Then I added the daisies to the top, piped some pink icing around the bottom border and finished it off with the big ass pink fantasy flower right in the center.  I freakin LOVE how it turned out.  It’s so girly, yet still so me.

Final Cake!

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Tonight was the last class for Course 3 and it was fun, fun, fun! The only requirement was we had to make a 2 tier cake, beyond that we had free reign. I went with fondant, because it’s my new best friend. Originally I had wanted to make a red and black marbled cake, but sadly my order of fondant didn’t make it in time and all I has was white…so white cake it was. I was pretty undecided on what I wanted to do with my cake when I got to class, all I knew was I wanted to make some fondant roses. My black fondant came in right before class, so being the dark and twisty girl that I am I made black roses and sprinkled them with black cake sparkles.

I decided to keep my cake kind of simple and classy, so I added black fondant bands at the bottom of each tier and made a gum paste/fondant skull applique with more sparkles for the top. Being obsessed with all things red and black I had to add a few red details with the little bow and some red buttons.

So here is the final product, I am very much in love with it!

Cuppycakes!

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

This week’s class offered the option to make cupcakes instead of a cake and I jumped at the chance. I figured instead of trying to stick to one theme on a cake, I could try out a bunch of different things on the cupcakes. I also pussied out this week and used a box mix *shrugs* sue me ;)

My cupcakes came out extra tasty and moist, but I can see now that moist doesn’t always equal good in the decorating world. I tried to frost them and even using the techniques learned in class, the tops of the little bastards kept tearing off with the icing. This is the result:

They still tasted yummy though. I decided to hold off on icing them until I got to class because I was sure the amazing Rebecca would have some wonderful tip, and she did: put a shitload of icing on top :)

We did some more practice with flowers and dots and such…Rebecca even made a creepy little Michelin man, or maybe it was the Stay Puft Marshmallow dude, I dunno but I liked him!

We spent the rest of class decorating and I used some stars, flowers and shells to decorate my cupcakes but my favorite has to be Jack :)

These would have looked much better had the damn paper actually stuck to the cupcakes, but it kept pulling away, not sure how to rectify that issue but it’s killing my OCD side. Makes me want to scream! I have issues ;)

Next week is the final class for Lesson 1 and I am going to attempt to make another cake from scratch, stay tuned…

Hide and Seek Holiday Edition!

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The scissors were hung by the sewing machine with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there. The Scenesters were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of cupcakes danced in their heads.

When out on the tin roof there arose such a clatter, DIYScene sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window DIYScene flew like flashlightning, tore open the curtains and threw up the sash. When what to DIYScene ’s wondering eyes should appear, but a miniature man, and eight tiny reindeer, he whistled and shouted and called them by name. Now Angry ! Now Poisoned! Now Spoons and RedThread! On Fierce, on Smarmy, on Zombie and AnnaLady!

He spoke not a word but went straight to his work,
And filled all the gift baskets, and turned with a jerk. He sprang to his sleigh And away they all flew. But the Scenesters heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight, Merry Christmas to DIYScene and to DIYScene Good Night!

Mythbuster: Handmade is NOT Synonymous with Grandma!!

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Admit it, so many of you out there automatically think “crocheted toaster cozy” or “knitted doily” when you hear the term handmade. I have to say, growing up, whenever my mom would utter “we can make that” I would cringe and imagine the horribly ridiculous concoction that would arise out of that statement (sorry mom!). I held on to the idea for a long time that handmade must equal something you would find in the corner of your grandmother’s home hidden underneath the mounds of 30 year old clothing patterns and scraps of yellowing fabric. This myth was bashed into a zillion pieces for me a few years ago when I discovered Etsy, and more importantly my favorite forum on Earth, DiYscene.
Upon delving into the depths of the thousands of shops on Etsy I began to uncover some amazing artists (yes, handmade CAN be art) spanning from clothing to food and everything you can imagine in between. The talent and variety (please don’t let the frequently boring front page of Etsy fool you) found there is astounding. Literally hours after opening my shop I received a note to check out one of Etsy’s street teams focused around the DiYscene forum. I was instantly in love. The forum abounds with interesting alternative crafters, seamstresses and artists. I had found my home! The women and men involved showed me the light and I began to see DiY as a lifestyle. It has become so important to me in a time of big business, sweatshops, and impersonal customer service to try to buy handmade whenever possible. You may pay a little more for it but the quality is above and beyond the pieces of mass produced crap you buy in mall stores and most sellers I have dealt with have been so friendly and appreciative. But beyond all of that you really can find amazing things on Etsy to suit ALL lifestyles – not just the elderly blue haired bingo playing ladies crowd.
To prove my point, I want to highlight some exquisitely made alternative pieces I have found on Etsy that would scare your grandma right outta her rocker!
First off, my friend Cindy over at aNGrYGiRL Gear makes the most AMAZING corsets, hoodies and shrugs. Full of black, metal and kickassery her pieces are beyond perfection. I happen to know this for a fact as I own close to 10 of her creations. Each of her designs offers its own unique style ranging from the playful naughtiness of the Innocence Corset to the freakalicious beauty of the Severity Corset. Throw into the mix her whimsical animal shrugs like the Panda, Kitty and Vermin and you have a well rounded line that appeals to all types of alternative fashion seekers.

Next I want to highlight a bag maker who’s handbags, clutches and messenger bags are so well made they could take a brutal beating and still keep on going. Miss Jamie is the beauty and brains behind Warning Label Creations and her alternative designs range from Gothic to Japanese street fashion. Again, I happen to own a couple of Jamie’s bags and I absolutely adore them. You can truly find a bag for any occasion at Warning Label Creations from the elegant Deathgrip Clutches for your evening on the town to the large Black Market bags that are perfect for the farmer’s market on a lazy Sunday morning (when you still want to look bad ass, of course). Jamie also makes scarves and clothing which are equally fabulous.

Now that we have you set up with a kickass wardrobe and a rockin bag to hold all your crap, let’s move on to home goods! *cough* FabulouslyFierce *cough* Anyhoo, Erica of WorthySoyCandles makes THE most olfactory pleasing candles with a huge variety of scents. Right now, her pumpkin soufflé is my favorite; it makes my entire kitchen smell like fresh baked pumpkin pie. I swear my husband even tried to eat it when I pulled it out of the box. In Erica’s shop you can make all kinds candles from tea lights to 8oz jar candles in any scent you want. Erica also makes some wonderful (not safe for granny) crocheted items, like the Peter Cottontail Hang Man purse.

In the market for a new couch?? Then check out VonErickson’s coffin couch; made to order with your choice of purple, red or black fabric. Probably the most wickedly delicious piece of furniture I have ever seen, when my ship comes in I will have one in every room!

I’m sure by now you get my point. Handmade is not just for octogenarians anymore, there is an entire culture of alternative handmade products out there that are young, hip and straight up badass. So don’t cringe when you hear “handmade”, take a second to check it out, I guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised.
